What is Ulthera?

Ulthera, also known as Ultherapy, is a non-invasive, non-surgical ultrasound treatment designed to lift and tighten loose skin on the face and neck. It has been approved by the FDA and is popular for its ability to provide a fresher, more youthful appearance with minimal to no downtime. Unlike surgical facelifts, Ulthera stimulates collagen production within the skin to achieve firmer and more toned skin.

How does Ulthera work?

Ulthera uses high-intensity microfocused ultrasound (HIFU) to target deep tissues below the skin’s surface, promoting collagen regeneration. This treatment bypasses the superficial layers of the skin, delivering energy at optimal depths and temperatures (around 60-70°C) to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. This leads to the strengthening and rebuilding of the collagen network, which tightens and lifts the skin over time.

What is Ulthera best suited for?

Ulthera is best suited for lifting and tightening skin around the brows, neck, and chin. It is ideal for patients looking for a non-surgical option to achieve a more youthful look and for those who wish to avoid the risks and downtime associated with surgery.

What to expect during treatment?

During treatment, Ultherapy device is used to deliver controlled heat to pre-marked areas of the face and neck. This stimulates collagen production. Treatment typically lasts 60-90 minutes for the full face and neck, or 60 minutes for lower face.

What are the treatment areas?

Common treatment areas include droopy eyebrows, saggy cheeks, jowls, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, a sagging neck, loose skin under the chin, and wrinkles on the chest area (décolletage).

Is the treatment painful?

Patients may experience mild discomfort during the application of ultrasound energy, which can be minimised with the use of topical anesthetic cream. Some aching sensation around the targeted area post-treatment is normal and should subside within 7-14 days.

How many sessions are needed to see results?

Most patients see improvements after just one session of Ultherapy. However, as aging continues, some patients may require additional treatments after a year or longer, depending on individual skin quality, the daily skin care and response to the treatment.

How soon can I see results from Ultherapy?

Visible results can appear just days after treatment, with progressive improvement over 2-3 months as new collagen is formed. This tightening and firming effect can continue for up to 12 months post-treatment.

What to avoid after the treatment?

Post-treatment, patients are generally advised to avoid excessive sun exposure or high energy skin treatment for two weeks.

Are there any side effects?

The procedure has a good safety profile, and side effects are typically mild, including temporary soreness and redness, and a low risk of burn, which resolve shortly after treatment. Makeup can be applied immediately after the session, and patients can return to their regular activities with no special care needed for the treated areas. There is no significant downtime associated with Ultherapy. In very rare situations if the nerve is irritated there might be temporary weakness or numbness, which is usually improved with time.
